Julián Letters Concerning Elián Gonzalez
July 6, 2000
Dear friends,
Yesterday I had the great honor to be invited to the Karl Marx theatre to the condecoration of Juan Miguel with the medal "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes". I`m sure that all of you will envy me. I want you to know that I did my best to represent all of you in those wonderful moments. I brought you in my heart in all those moments, every applause carried the strength of all of you and every emotional tear was shared with you. So dear friends this is a victory of all the good people that decided to fight for justice. I`m not going to give you the details of the act because I`m sure that you will read them in the media.
I only want to explain to those that don`t know why? the "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" medal. Céspedes was a patriot of our first Independence War. He was the first President of the Republic in War. In 1870 one of his sons Oscar of 23 years old was caught by the Spaniards fighting for the Independence, tried and condemned to death. A Spanish General wrote a letter to President Céspedes telling him that they were to kill his son and that in his hands was the salvation of Oscar if he goes out of Cuba and abandons the war. The answer of Céspedes with great pain was. "...Oscar is not my only son, there are all the Cubans that die fighting for our freedom". Since that day he is called "The Father of the Motherland". So for the Cubans it is very symbolic to give this medal to Juan Miguel.
Thanks you all for your support.

Dear friends,
Yesterday I saw on the Cuban Television a film about the welcome of Elian and remembered all of you a lot.
What reward are you going to obtain for all what you have done? I`m sure that if you can see that film you will feel really well paid. I suffer a lot thinking that you would not have the opportunity to see the happiness of those two grandfathers when they met the boy after 7 month, how they cried of emotion. To see the people on the streets (even though they were told not to make a demonstration) greeting the car where they went out of the airport. But most of all to see the party that they held with their family and intimate friends, see Elian playing with all the children really happy at last in his home. I`m sure that none of you could hold back tears like happened to me and would feel really paid. I hope that some day you could see this complete film.
Thanks to all for your efforts.

Dear friends,
Yesterday was a day of joy for all of us and many more people all around the world.
Yesterday will be remembered in many years for being the day when justice was made for a family after more than 7 months of struggle. But also it will be remembered for the demonstration that it gave to all the world of a simple man like Juan Miguel with a very big dignity that said 'no' to the bribery, that had the patience and love that guided him to recover his son. Also it showed everybody what is the strength of solidarity when a whole country (Cuba), more than 70% of all Americans and many people all around the world get together to fight for a cause. There are many lessons that we can achieve from these long 7 months and today, when each one of us feels happy and relief of all this mess, we have to get a second wind and began to fight against the CAA (Cuban Adjustment Act) and all the laws, acts and resolutions that are around the blockade. If we don`t finish with all this inconceivable falsehoods tomorrow we can have another or many Elians.
I invite you all to continue this struggle.
I want to congratulate and thank all of you for the work you have done and don`t forget that forever you will have a friend in Cuba.

Dear Cindy and others friends,
I will like to give you my humble opinion.
It is a pity for us Cubans from Cuba to say that Elián made many people in USA and all around the world open their eyes and see what is real in the relations of USA/Cuba. You know very well all what we have done and how we will love that day when we can have back Elián, Juan Miguel and the rest. But in my humble opinion I think that now is very clear for almost everybody that this is not a problem of a boy and a father, of CANF and Castro, it is a problem of the ultra right wing of the USA using CANF against the Revolutionary Cuba. If there is any doubt I will try to give you some facts.
- Who represents the new lawyers and Judicial Watch?
- Why did this new group step over the Miami lawyers?
- Why you don`t hear more Lazaro or Marysleisis?
But we can go to the beginning.
- Why didn`t the INS and DOJ solve this case at the beginning as many of you say?
- Why did the 11th Circuit make the injunction and up to now didn't drop it?
- Why can so many not law abiding people kidnap, riot, insult and nothing happens?
The list could go on and on but I think that is unnecessary I hope that you agree with me. But well the question is what to do?
Up to now Juan Miguel has been the only one that has respected the US laws. What will happen if tomorrow Juan Miguel goes to Canada with Elián and gets back to Cuba? Next week the marines will be in Cardenas looking for the criminal that didn`t respect the US laws. There will be a reason to approve a new reinforcement of the blockade. Or be sure that they will do something against the evil Cuba.
Dear friends this is a problem of the United States.  I`m a Cuban and I know what to do in Cuba. We will be very pleased to have good relations with the government of the US (with many of the people we never lost that good relation) but to get those relations we are not ready to lose our sovereignty or our dignity.I`m my humble opinion together with the Elián cause we have to fight for having normal relations between the US and Cuba.
Thanks for all you have done up to now and let's continue our struggle.

Dear friend,
Thanks very much for your post. In Cuba we really do our best to form good human being. For us is very important to inculcate our childrens values like honesty, dignity, patriotism and most of all solidarity and internationalism toward humanity. All of this together with giving them a very good education, high cultural levels and teaching them to think by themselves.
Marti said "Be cultured to be free" and at the early 1960s Fidel said "in the future Cuba will be a country of scientists".
The economical situation provocated by the blockade makes it dificult to achieve these goals, but even  in this moment we are involved in a movement to get a high level cultural programs to the great masses so in a not so far future we can make of Cuba one of the most, if not the most, cultured country in the world.
Because all of that I think that families as the Dervaes (creators of the "Send Elián Home Now!" website : www.pathtofreedom.com) deserve all our love. I`m sure that all around the world there are many people with very good values and with our work we will contribute toward making this group bigger every day.
Thanks very much again for what you all have been doing and don`t dismay let's continue the fight until the last victory.
Julián
